JOB FUNCTION

Reporting to the Director of Underwriting, the successful candidate will be responsible for the timely and accurate assessment of individual risk utilizing established guidelines and a thorough knowledge of medical conditions and terminology. This position is responsible for ensuring acceptable risk is rated in accordance with established procedures, supporting the Saskatchewan Blue Cross’ medical underwriting philosophy and corporate objectives.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review and process applications for all lines of individual coverage (health, dental and life products)
  • Assess the risk of applications in accordance with predetermined standards, procedures and policies, and within specified underwriting authority limits
  • Review applications to identify factors affecting risk and evaluate pre-existing medical history
  • Gather information, either verbal or written, from the applicant, (and when necessary medical professionals), and accurately interpret such information to make decisions
  • Approve, postpone or decline coverage; consulting with senior underwriting staff for direction in unclear cases or where guidelines are not clearly applicable
  • On risk acceptable business, rate or restrict benefits when necessary
  • Research individual medical conditions that may not have previously been encountered; escalating new or unusual conditions to senior underwriting staff for follow up
  • Arrange medicals and paramedicals
  • All correspondence (eg. telephone and word processing) and systems entry for the medical underwriting process, including entry of medical underwriting information for new, option and add dependent applications, declines, withdrawals, etc.
  • Maintenance and approval of medical evidence payments
  • Work closely with the Individual Sales team to support corporate sales and business objectives
  • Maintain accurate and up to date files by documenting all key decisions and actions
  • Effectively communicate underwriting information to related parties
  • Provide support to the overall individual health and life sales effort
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree preferably with emphasis in Risk Management, Insurance, Nursing/Health Care or a related field and previous experience in a similar role or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Previous experience in the insurance industry, or with medical underwriting would be considered an asset
  • Education in medical terminology and anatomy would be considered an asset
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel with an ability to easily learn new software programs
  • Ability to work both independently as well as in a team environment
  • Demonstrated professional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong organizational, problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, handle shifting priorities and meet deadlines while maintaining strict confidentiality
  • Effective research and problem-solving skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Results oriented with the ability to thrive in a fast paced, dynamic environment
  • Commitment to ongoing personal development and willingness to pursue ALU and/or other underwriting related course
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo a background check
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada on an unrestricted basis
