How to Stay Active in the Winter – and have fun doing it!

With the weather warming up this week, we encourage you to get outside and play.

Along with cold weather comes a likeliness to spend more time indoors. But spending time outside can be just as fun in both the warm summer months and the cold winter months. Here are our tips for staying active in the winter!

Tobogganing

This classic winter activity often enjoyed with friends and family, is also a great workout! After working hard to climb up the steepest hill in your neighborhood, the smooth sled ride down will feel even more rewarding. This activity is also a great way to get the kids out of the house after being inside most of the day.

Shoveling Snow

A winter chore that seems to never end… Shoveling snow is a cumbersome task, but it is actually a great workout! Pushing the heavy snow works both your arms and legs, and can even get your heart rate up.

Ice skating

Whether you are a seasoned pro, or new to the activity, ice skating is a great activity to enjoy in winter months! Layer up with warm clothes and enjoy the brisk winter air. Check out your local outdoor rinks this season to participate in this icy winter activity.

Bundling up and going for a winter walk

Hoping to head outside for some fresh air? Gather your family and bundle up for a winter walk. We often go for walks in the spring and summer, but keeping this habit in the winter is a great way to spend some time outside. Remember to check the weather to avoid strong winds and icy roads!

Cross Country Skiing

When the ground is covered in a fresh layer of snow, try out cross-country skiing! Even if you don’t live in the country, there are often trails right in the city that are designed for cross-country skiing. This makes this winter activity even easier to enjoy. A great activity to do on your own, or with family!

Building a Snow Fort

A fun way to get out of the house and spend time with your family is to build a snow fort! This will get your body moving on those chilly winter days, while putting your architecture skills to the test.

We hope we have inspired you to try out some winter activities this year. Getting outside and enjoying the colder weather is a great way to embrace winter, and take care of yourself, in a fun way! Another great way to take care of yourself is to purchase a Personal Health Plan from Saskatchewan Blue Cross. Any plan purchased in December are effective January 1.
