Summer 2025 travel outlook: A reminder to review group travel coverage
As travel rebounds in 2025, plan members are eager to explore the world again. Whether it’s international adventures or trips within Canada, the need for clear, comprehensive travel protection has never been more important.
According to Blue Cross’s Outbound Canada: Summer 2025 Outlook, one in three Canadians plan to travel internationally this summer, while many others are choosing domestic getaways. However, with ongoing economic volatility, global unrest and travel disruptions, employees are increasingly seeking reassurance and support when planning their trips.
As a Group Advisor, this is an excellent opportunity to help Plan Administrators prepare their employees for the season ahead by revisiting their group travel insurance coverage.
Encourage a review of the group plan travel coverage
Many group plans include travel insurance as part of the Extended Health Benefits, but it’s essential to ensure Plan Administrators understand:
- The maximum number of days covered per trip
- Who is covered (employees only, or also spouses/dependents)
- What’s covered—and just as importantly, what’s not. For example, does the plan include trip cancellation, interruption, or baggage loss coverage? Are there any exclusions, limitations, or pre-travel requirements to be aware of?
- Any eligibility rules or restrictions that may apply
Domestic travel needs protection too
There’s a common misconception that travel insurance is only needed when going abroad. But emergency medical costs, trip cancellations, and disruptions can occur even within Canada—especially when private bookings or excursions are involved.
If gaps are identified, or additional coverage is needed…
Saskatchewan Blue Cross offers a flexible suite of top-up and stand-alone travel insurance products that can help employees travel with confidence:
- Top-up coverage for trips that exceed the group plan’s day limit
- Single-trip or annual plans for additional coverage not included in the group plan
- Canada-only coverage at reduced rates for interprovincial travel
- All-Inclusive options with trip cancellation, interruption, and baggage coverage
- VIP Travel add-ons for Personal Health Plan members
Key message to Plan Administrators:
“Your employees may already have travel coverage through your group plan, but it’s important they understand the details. A quick review could reveal opportunities to improve protection and avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs.”
