COMMUNITY CHALLENGE OFFERS $10K SO KIDS CAN PLAY

REGINA – The Saskatchewan Blue Cross Go Out & Play Challenge is back for a ninth year. Communities can now register for the 10-day challenge, which focuses on the importance of outdoor play. The winning community receives $10,000 for a project that gets kids and families out to play.

“Getting kids outside is important for their bodies, their minds and their happiness,” says Marnie Forsberg, Manager of Saskatchewan in motion. “Unfortunately, kids are spending less and less time outdoors these days. We’re happy to partner with Saskatchewan Blue Cross on an event that addresses this issue.”

Participating communities rally residents to log physical activity minutes during the challenge. The community with the most minutes wins the $10,000 grand prize. Last year’s winner, Pilot Butte, logged more than 480,000 minutes of activity. Across the province, participants supporting 45 communities logged a total of 4.4 million minutes of activity.

“Through this challenge we’re leaving a legacy of play for Saskatchewan communities,” says Tanya Murphy, Community Relations Coordinator with Saskatchewan Blue Cross. “We hope it inspires families to spend more time together playing long after the challenge ends.”

To date, the challenge has awarded $135,000 to 16 communities. The winners have built skate parks, sport courts and play spaces, and revitalized parks and swimming pools.

Communities can register for the challenge until February 7, 2020. Those who register by the December 20 early bird deadline earn bonus minutes to add to their total. The registration form and challenge rules are available online at challenge.saskatchewaninmotion.ca.
