Frequently Asked Questions: VIP Travel Plan
Will I be covered if I travel to a region affected by a travel advisory?
No, if you travel to a region with an active “avoid all non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” Government of Canada travel advisory, you will not have Emergency Medical Care coverage under your VIP Travel plan.
If I am in a region affected by a travel advisory and it was not in place when I arrived, would I have coverage?
Yes, if an active “avoid all non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” Government of Canada travel advisory was issued after you arrived, you have coverage under your VIP Travel benefits. However, you are strongly advised to return home as soon as possible.
What if I have a medical emergency and require treatment while on my trip?
If your trip departure occurred before an active “avoid all non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” Government of Canada travel advisory was issued, you are advised to return home as soon as possible. Should you incur a claim while you are travelling abroad and actively trying to secure transportation home, it will be subject to all other terms of your policy.
If you departed after an active “avoid all non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” Government of Canada travel advisory was issued, you do not have coverage.
Am I eligible for a trip extension in the event of a medical emergency?
Yes, your VIP Travel coverage is automatically extended in the event of a medical emergency that requires hospitalization. Coverage will be extended during hospitalization and for up to 72 hours following discharge.
Does my VIP Travel policy include an automatic trip extension if my travel home is delayed by the airline carrier?
Yes, it does. There is an automatic 72-hour extension if your return trip is delayed by a carrier delay, a traffic accident, or mechanical failure of the private vehicle used to return from your trip.
Am I eligible to purchase Top-up insurance to extend my coverage if I am unable to return home from the affected region?
Yes, you are eligible to purchase a Top-up policy as long as your current travel coverage is still active and you have not exceeded the total number of days. Please note that if an active “avoid all non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” Government of Canada travel advisory is issued, you are advised to return home as soon as possible.
If I purchased Top-up coverage, how many days should I purchase?
When an active “avoid all non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” Government of Canada travel advisory is issued, it may be difficult for Canadians to get home. We recommend purchasing for an extended period, knowing that if you return early, you can request a reimbursement for the unused portion of your trip.
The Top-up coverage will provide you with coverage, regardless of the travel advisories in place. However, all other exclusions and limitations listed in the Top-up policy will apply.
