Adjustments to formulary names and definitions

We are updating the language we use to describe formularies as part of our contract rewrite. These changes affect wording only. There are no changes to the actual drug lists or how claims are adjudicated.

This update is intended to make formulary references clearer and more consistent for advisors and plan administrators.

What is changing

The way we name and define formularies in contracts and proposals is being updated to better reflect how prescription drug coverage works today.

New contract wording

Saskatchewan Drug Plan Formulary
A list of approved prescription drugs as provided by the Saskatchewan Drug Plan. This includes drugs that are eligible for reimbursement under the provincial drug plan.

Saskatchewan Blue Cross Formulary
A list of approved prescription drugs as provided by Saskatchewan Blue Cross. This formulary includes drugs listed on the Saskatchewan Drug Plan Formulary, as well as an expanded list of other drugs.

Important clarification

The Saskatchewan Blue Cross Formulary is the same drug listing that was previously referred to as “non-formulary.” The drug lists themselves have not changed. Only the terminology has been updated to improve clarity and consistency.

What this means for you

  • No impact to existing coverage or eligible drugs
  • No changes to claims processing
  • Clearer language in contracts and proposals going forward

If you have questions about this update or how it applies to your plan, please contact your Saskatchewan Blue Cross representative.
