Managing drug costs in a changing landscape

Prescription drugs continue to evolve rapidly. New treatments are improving outcomes for patients but they often come with higher costs and more complex coverage considerations. This makes strong drug program design and effective cost control measures more important than ever.

A well-structured drug program helps ensure members have access to the medications they need while supporting the long-term sustainability of the plan. This balance is especially important for retiree benefits, where affordability and predictable costs matter over time.

A key part of our Retiree Product

As part of our approach to sustainable coverage, Special Authorization and Exception Drug Status (EDS) have been built into our newly launched retiree product as key cost containment measures.

These programs support the evidence-based use of medications by ensuring certain drugs are covered only when specific medical criteria are met. They also help manage access to high-cost and specialty drugs which can have a significant impact on overall plan costs.

By applying these coverage controls, Saskatchewan Blue Cross helps ensure drug benefits remain affordable while continuing to support appropriate, medically necessary treatment.

Aligning with provincial programs

Special Authorization and EDS programs are aligned with provincial drug programs wherever possible. This alignment helps reduce duplication, supports consistent coverage decisions and can lower overall costs for members.

For retirees, this means clearer coverage pathways and coordinated decision-making. For plan sustainability, it means better cost management over the long term.
